and btw: why do image boards need "new" software? its literally a fucking image upload forum with a front end to display it. does it do anything interesting?

yeah, it's popular with the lain types. they love that functional programming and category theory shit.
the site is actually written in haskell, so props for that. it can be a fun mental exercise, trying to solve problems with FP patterns, but i can't imagine shipping anything real with it.
